GAMA in conjunction with Wellness in Action, is excited to announce a 2018 mini grant to be awarded to visual artists, with the intention to spark discussion amongst Muslim immigrant communities about the importance of mental care and mental health. We will be awarding 3 mini grants of $150 to visual artists from immigrant communities, who are interested in creating art with themes related to mental health.

The application itself does not require you to create any artwork for the theme. Once accepted, winning artists will have a timespan during which to create their artwork, with an event in late August to present the work.

The timeline for this grant is as follows:

• Application Deadline: June 27th
• Winners Announced: June 30th
• Artwork Creation Deadline: August 8th
• Artwork Presentation: Late August, TBD

 

The awarded artists will be required to do the following:

• Must be able to meet grant deadlines set by GAMA.
• Attend and present their work at a GAMA presentation event in the Bay Area, late August, exact date TBD.
• Attend three status update group phone calls during the art creation period
• Must be an artist in one the following visual media: Painting, calligraphy, photography, digital art, or other if approved by GAMA.
• Must be a Muslim immigrant or refugee, second or third generation included.
• Must be based in the Bay Area.

 

Selections will depend on how closely connected the mental health themes come through in your inspiration and work. The goal of our event will be to create safe spaces for immigrant muslim communities to begin a healthy dialogue on mental health and wellness. The exact themes and content of the art pieces, as well as the total number of pieces, will be up to the artist’s creative license, with prior approval by GAMA curators.
